Specially Designed Education Services | Embracing Diversity in Special Education: Reflecting on International Students Day

Hello, Champions!

November 17th was International Students Daya great reminder of the diverse journeys our students take as they navigate the world of learning. As teachers in special education classrooms, we witness the unique stories of each student, their triumphs, and the challenges they face. For many, the classroom becomes a sanctuary—a place where connections are formed and support is found amidst life’s complexities.

Let’s celebrate the remarkable strides our students make on their learning journeys. Let’s recognize the tenacity and dedication they demonstrate, often overcoming obstacles at home or in environments where cheering may be sparse. Always couple guidance with kind words, meeting students in your special education classroom where they are—emotionally, in their learning, or among friends. International Students Day urges us to express care for special education students everywhere, really focusing on the significance of patience and understanding in their educational paths.

Consider these impactful ways to nurture this spirit in the special education classroom throughout the year:

1. Foster connections by facilitating letter exchanges between your class and students in another part of the world. This not only cultivates friendships but also broadens perspectives on different ways of life.

2. Encourage students to engage with older generations, gaining insights into their unique school experiences or inviting guest speakers to share the profound value of education.

3. Explore schools in other countries, potentially collaborating on projects or inviting international students to join inclusive activities. Exchange best practices, and work together to nurture global citizens who understand and appreciate the collective future we are building through education.

4. Host an international potluck. Food is a universal connector and a delightful way to celebrate diversity in your special education classroom. Allow students and their families to share dishes from their cultures, creating a rich tapestry of flavors and traditions. This not only encourages appreciation for one another but also fosters a sense of community through the joy of tasting and sharing each other’s home-cooked meals.

5. Take a moment to acknowledge the unique challenges our special education students face. Moving through a new educational environment with different languages and customs poses significant challenges. By building empathy and understanding their struggles, we can provide more effective support. Listening to their stories and experiences allows us to create an environment where they feel welcome and valued for their global perspectives.

6. Highlight the achievements of famous international graduates with moderate to severe disabilities. Recognizing individuals who overcame challenges and found success can inspire confidence and motivation among current students.

In essence, International Students Day in the special education classroom serves as a reminder that education transcends borders. Students from various corners of the globe, each with their unique abilities and challenges, come together to learn, grow, and exchange ideas. Our diversity is not just a strength—it’s a cornerstone.

Let’s stay focused on our students…TOGETHER.

Scheduling Tip

Find a student in your classroom who can read and understand your master schedule. Assign them a job in the morning to help set up individual student schedules. See the video of Megan setting up the schedule.

Suzanne’s student Megan was her Teacher’s Assistant first period during her junior and senior year. One of her jobs, among other clerical tasks, was to set up individual student schedules. It saved Suzanne prep time in the morning and was a great vocational experience for Megan.
