Functional Academics by Specially Designed Education Services | Finding Strength in Unity: Navigating the Second Month of Teaching

Hey there, Champions!

As we step into the second month of teaching, it’s like the changing of seasons. September’s “Honeymoon Period” has faded, and the reality of the classroom sets in. For educators like us, it’s a time when we realize that we can’t do it all alone. We need to rely on a village of support, including paraeducators, peer coaches, parents, and administrators. Most importantly, we must listen intently to the voices of our students who struggle with even the basic needs and functional skills that we desperately want them to learn and step boldly toward their personalized independent living.

Embracing the October Realities

October is that moment when we might feel overwhelmed by the sheer weight of our caseloads, the never-ending scheduling, assessments, and the daunting task of curriculum planning. It’s when we grapple with the challenge of making our data collection systems work with fidelity. But fear not, for these are the moments that shape us into better educators.

Going Slow to Go Far

One vital lesson I’ve learned over the years is that after the “September Honeymoon Period,” it’s crucial to slow down. Focus on the basics and, above all, build a culture within your classroom. Here’s where SDES comes into play, providing the much-needed structure and support that teachers like us crave.

The Power of Support

If there’s one thing I wish I had when I started, it’s the kind of support that Functional Academics offers. It’s a lifeline that empowers both educators and students, providing a clear path to follow, especially during those overwhelming moments.

Seasons Change, and So Can We

Just like the changing of the seasons, with trees turning, rain beginning to fall, and the warmth of sweaters and hot chocolate, there’s comfort in knowing that you’re not alone. Many educators are going through the same struggles and facing similar challenges. It’s a reminder that we’re part of a community that understands the journey.

You Are Not Alone

When you feel the weight of the classroom on your shoulders, remember, you are not alone! Reach out to a colleague, a fellow teacher, or someone who might need a listening ear. Lean on each other, for together, we can weather any storm.

So, here’s to the second month of teaching—a time for growth, unity, and the unwavering spirit of educators like you. Keep going, keep growing, and keep believing in the difference you make every day.

With solidarity and encouragement,

Barb Beck 🌟

Scheduling Tip

Find a student in your classroom who can read and understand your master schedule. Assign them a job in the morning to help set up individual student schedules. See the video of Megan setting up the schedule.

Suzanne’s student Megan was her Teacher’s Assistant first period during her junior and senior year. One of her jobs, among other clerical tasks, was to set up individual student schedules. It saved Suzanne prep time in the morning and was a great vocational experience for Megan.
