Establishing a Solid Foundation for Education and Learning 🌟

Clarify Classroom Mission and Goals 🚀

Begin by articulating a clear mission statement that serves as the North Star for your classroom. Ensure that everyone, from educators to paraeducators, is aligned with the same outcomes and goals for student success. This shared vision establishes a unified foundation for the entire team, allowing for a cohesive approach to education and learning.

Lay Out Job Expectations Clearly 📋

Before paraeducators dive into working with students, provide a detailed overview of job expectations.

Highlight key areas:

    • Attendance and Punctuality ⏰
      • Emphasize the importance of being punctual and ready to engage with students promptly.
      • Ensure a shared understanding of each student’s schedule and needs upon arrival.
      • Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential for maintaining a stable learning environment.
    • Professionalism 🎓
      • Stress the significance of maintaining the highest level of professionalism in the workplace.
      • Set standards for conduct and collaboration within the classroom.
      • A professional demeanor fosters a positive learning atmosphere.
    • Confidentiality 🤐
      • Instill a strong commitment to confidentiality.

    • School Policies and Procedures 🏫
      • Familiarize paraeducators with general school policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with the broader educational environment.
      • Consistency in following policies and procedures contributes to a well-structured learning experience.

Tailoring Education and Learning for Every Student’s Needs 🤝

Disability Awareness and Sensitivity Training 🧠

Provide comprehensive training on the various disabilities present in the classroom. Help paraeducators understand sensory and processing needs, adapting communication to match students’ abilities, and presenting information at an appropriate instructional level. Tailoring education and learning to individual needs is essential for fostering an inclusive and effective learning environment.

      • Educate paraeducators on the nuances of prompting during direct instruction, emphasizing the gradual fading of prompts over time.
      • Provide insights into the different types of prompts and their appropriate use in varied settings.
      • Effective prompting techniques can significantly enhance the learning process for students with diverse needs.

Fostering a Culture of Respect and Collaboration for Education and Learning 💼

Scheduling Tip

Find a student in your classroom who can read and understand your master schedule. Assign them a job in the morning to help set up individual student schedules. See the video of Megan setting up the schedule.

Suzanne’s student Megan was her Teacher’s Assistant first period during her junior and senior year. One of her jobs, among other clerical tasks, was to set up individual student schedules. It saved Suzanne prep time in the morning and was a great vocational experience for Megan.
